Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE)Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) is a national self-advocacy organization.  It is made up of all the state self-advocacy organizations in the United States.  Eighteen people with disabilities represent nine regions on the Board.

Max Barrows, Outreach Director for Green Mountain Self-Advocates was elected to the board in 2008 and again in 2012. GMSA supports Max to be an outstanding leader of this vital national organization. Every 2 years GMSA supports 50 to 75 Self-Advocates and allies to participate in the SABE national conference. Vermonters typically teach up to 8 workshops on a variety of topics including employment, supporting youth leaders, self-determination, sexuality and using digital tools to promote peer connections.

In 2015 Max took the lead as a SABE leader collaborating with a new research and training center based at the University of Massachusetts Boston that is examining policies that help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities find and keep quality employment. More information about the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Advancing Employment for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities can be found at Think Work.
